In the twenty first century, we are being exposed to many
different technologies, and because technology has increased the intensity and
complexity of literate environments, we must change the way we teach!
Literacy has changed from traditional, print based literacy, to a more multimodal, digital aspect. Students will need to know how to read these texts in order to produce their own and thrive in the 21st century. If these resources are used effectively, they can both enhance and promote higher learning.
The 21st century demands that a literate person must possess a
range of multiple, dynamic, and pliable literacies (NCTE, 2008). Students must
have ways of acquiring and knowing information from vast knowledge bases using
skills such as: critical thinking, problem solving, global awareness, and collaboration.
As teachers, strategies we should use should include: project based learning, student centered learning, and technology integration.
